I’m doing all the right things, and NOTHING is changing!

How many times have you heard this; or said it? I have heard it or said it more times than I can count. So why is it that we can be doing all the right things, and not see any results? I have TWO possible explanations. I am posting the first today, and then I am going to discuss the second tomorrow, because they are both equally complex and lengthy discussions!

Here’s the first. You actually ARE doing all of the right things but your timeline is off. A really good friend of mine gives an excellent real life example of this. Imagine going to a restaurant and placing your order. You then relax in your booth/seat visiting with friends. You don’t go back and stand next to the chef to make sure he cooks your food right. You also don’t leave after 5 minutes because you don’t have your food yet. You wait…patiently…KNOWING that your food is coming. Now…keep in mind that a 3 course gourmet meal will most likely take a little bit longer to prepare than a house salad. We can set our goal dates as best we can, but then have to realize that ultimately, THAT control is not completely ours.

Another example of this would be a pregnant woman. As a woman, you KNOW that you’re not going to be pregnant forever. (It may not always feel that way…but you know you’re not) We are given “DUE DATES”, and some even go to the extreme to say…”If this baby isn’t out by *said date…I’m going to be induced because THAT IS THE DAY that this baby is supposed to be born!” Do we really know? A “Due Date” afterall is only an estimate; an educated GUESS! Our first daughter was born 2 days early…and our second was 6 DAYS LATE! I understand what it feels like to be “Overdue,” but when our second was born…she weighed EXACTLY the same as our first daughter…to the very ounce! She was even 1/2 inch shorter. So, just as complications that can occur due to forcing labor, ie: cesarean delivery, longer labor, extra painful contractions due to Pitosin (the labor stimulant), the baby isn’t ready yet, etc., WE may not be ready to reach our goals at the date we set for ourselves. Many times there are MORE things for us to learn. We should actually be grateful that we have “extra time”, because we just weren’t ready.

Now take some time to think about this option tonight, but make sure to read about the other tomorrow. If I could venture a guess as to the percentage of people that each of these options applied, I would say that this first option may apply to no more than 25% of those who feel this way. The second option, which I will be discussing tomorrow would easily apply to 75% or more.
